KOREAN RESTAURANT FIELD NOTES
To Go in Korean: Takeaway vs Dine In (포장 vs 매장)
By Jeremy (제레미) · · 3 min read
For “to go” or takeaway on a Korean restaurant screen, look for 포장 (po-jang). For dine-in, look for 매장 (mae-jang). 매장 means the shop or premises; 포장 means packaging. In this ordering context, they tell the restaurant where you plan to eat.
Original learning examples from MenuNori’s fictional shop. Restaurant screens, recipes and prices vary. How we make these guides.
The decision comes before the food
Imagine you want gimbap for a picnic. You find 김밥 and choose one portion. The food is right, but selecting 매장 tells the restaurant you intend to eat there. Correct the order type before you finish. MenuNori deliberately starts with dine-in selected so that you practice noticing this detail.
| Screen word | Meaning here | Say it |
|---|---|---|
| 매장 | Dine in / for here | mae-jang |
| 포장 | Takeaway / to go | po-jang |
| 매장 식사 | Eating at the restaurant | mae-jang sik-sa |
| 포장 주문 | Takeaway order | po-jang ju-mun |
What might change after your choice?
The restaurant may serve your food on a tray or pack it into containers. Available menu items, packaging charges, and pickup instructions can vary. Our practice shop keeps the same menu and price in both modes so you can learn the words first. It is not a promise about prices or packaging at a real restaurant.
Short phrases are enough
You can name the dish and add the phrase: 김밥 하나 포장해 주세요 means “One gimbap to go, please.” 하나 is one. You do not need a long explanation of your plans. A clear choice and a polite 주세요 are useful starting points.
If you selected the wrong button
Before checkout, look for an order-type setting or return to the previous screen. If you cannot change it, ask a staff member before paying. After payment, ask whether the restaurant can change the packaging; it may not always be possible.
Practice the same food in both modes
In mission 1, choose 포장 and add one gimbap and one portion of dumplings. Read the order-type line in the basket before confirming. For a second attempt, leave 매장 selected and see the feedback. The food total stays the same, but the mission is incomplete because the order type is wrong.
The general meaning of a word and the label on a particular machine are not the same thing. If a screen is unclear, use translation or ask staff. This rehearsal teaches a common distinction, not a universal kiosk layout.
One order, two different intentions
Compare these practice slips. Both contain the same food and cost ₩7,000, but only the second matches a takeaway mission.
Eating at the shop
매장
김밥 × 1
군만두 × 1
You expect to eat here. The unchanged price does not turn this into a takeaway order.
Taking the food away
포장
김밥 × 1
군만두 × 1
You expect packed food. Read the mode line before the item names.
When pointing is clearer than explaining
If you cannot pronounce the word confidently, show the 포장 label and say 포장해 주세요. If the staff member asks a follow-up question you cannot understand, use a translation app. Memorizing these two words helps you start the interaction; it does not mean you need to understand every reply.
Quick check: your food is right, but the slip says 매장. Is mission 1 complete?
No. Switch the mode to 포장. You can keep the correct dishes in your basket and change only the order type.
